Nauman is an exceptional instructor! He is very patient and knows exactly what to focus on you as an individual to prepare you for the test. I went to him after a couple of failed driving tests on the recommendation of a friend. My confidence was very low when I came to him and not only did he boost my confidence but also guided me based on my strengths and weaknesses. Finally passed the test all because of him!

What Is a First Driving Lesson With BNM?

A first driving lesson is your introduction to the car and to driving on the road. With BNM Driving School it is a 90-minute introductory lesson for £55, one-to-one with a DVSA approved instructor in a dual-control car. You learn the controls, move off and stop on quiet roads, and most learners finish with a short drive.

The lesson is for new learners with a provisional licence, in a manual or an automatic. It is not a test, and you don’t need any experience. At the end your instructor gives you an honest estimate of the hours you will need, with no obligation to book more.

Why Start With BNM's 90-Minute First Lesson?

A 90-minute first lesson gives you 5 things a shorter taster can’t: time to actually drive, a chance to choose your gearbox, an instructor you have met, an honest plan and a low-cost start.

Time to Actually Drive

The checks and cockpit drill take time. With 90 minutes, most learners still move off, stop and drive on quiet roads before the lesson ends.

Choose Manual or Automatic

Learn in the gearbox you are curious about and talk through the other one. You can decide before you book more lessons.

Meet Your Instructor First

You spend 90 minutes with the person who will teach you. Ask anything, and see whether their teaching style suits you.

An Honest Plan

Your instructor estimates how many hours you will need and suggests a weekly slot, based on how you actually drove.

A Low-Cost, No-Pressure Start

£55 for 90 minutes, with no obligation to book more. If driving isn't for you yet, you have spent less than a 2-hour lesson.

Should Your First Lesson Be Manual or Automatic?

Choose manual driving lessons if you want a licence for both types of car. Choose automatic driving lessons if you want fewer controls to learn and more time for steering, mirrors and the road. The table compares lesson one in each on 6 points.

Manual first lessonAutomatic first lesson
Pedals3: clutch, brake and accelerator2: brake and accelerator

Who Are BNM First Driving Lessons For?

BNM first lessons suit 5 types of new learner across South and South West London, from Battersea and Wimbledon to Croydon and Sutton:

  • Complete beginners: you have never sat in the driver’s seat, and you start from the very first step.
  • Nervous learners: you set the pace, the lesson starts on quiet roads and dual controls let your instructor stop the car at any moment.
  • Learners with ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia or autism: all 4 BNM instructors have taught learners with these conditions, and adapt how they explain each step.
  • Students and workers: lessons run Monday to Friday 8am–8pm and Saturday 9am–5pm, with pick-up from home, work or college.
  • Learners who prefer a female instructor: a female instructor is available on request.

Already had some practice with family? Tell your instructor. Lesson one then starts from where you are, not from zero.

What Do You Need Before Your First Driving Lesson?

Returning driver on an automatic refresher lesson with BNM Driving School in Croydon

You need 4 things before your first driving lesson. The theory test isn’t one of them.

  • A provisional driving licence: apply on GOV.UK from 15 years and 9 months. It costs £34 online and should arrive within a week. Bring it to lesson one.
  • Be 17 or over: you can apply for your licence before 17, but you can’t drive a car on the road until your 17th birthday.
  • Good enough eyesight: you must read a number plate from 20 metres, with glasses or contact lenses if you need them. Your instructor checks this first.
  • Thin, flat shoes: trainers are ideal, so you can feel the pedals.

You don’t need to pass your theory test first. DVSA surveys from July 2024 to April 2025 found learners with no lessons before their theory test were 25% more likely to fail their driving test first time, so starting lessons early helps.

What Happens on Your First Driving Lesson? 6 Steps

Your first BNM lesson follows 6 steps, from the paperwork to a short drive. You set the pace: some learners reach step 5 in the first hour, and others spend longer on the controls.

Licence and Eyesight Check

Your instructor picks you up, checks your provisional licence and asks you to read a number plate from 20 metres. Then you talk about your goals and any worries.

A Quiet Starting Point

Your instructor drives to a quiet road nearby, away from busy traffic, so your first minutes in the driver's seat are calm.

The Cockpit Drill

Doors, seat, steering, seatbelt and mirrors. You set the car up for you, a routine you will repeat at the start of every drive.

The Controls

Pedals, steering, indicators and the handbrake, plus the clutch and gears in a manual or the gear selector in an automatic. Only what you need first.

Moving Off and Stopping

Mirrors, signal, blind spot, then move off and pull up at the kerb. You repeat it until it feels natural, then drive along quiet roads.

Feedback and Your Plan

Your instructor recaps what went well, estimates the hours you will need and suggests your next lesson. There is no obligation to book.

Why Choose BNM for Your First Driving Lesson?

New learners choose BNM Driving School for their first lesson across South and South West London for 6 reasons:

  • DVSA approved instructors: our instructors have 5–15 years of teaching experience, and every lesson follows the DVSA National Standard.
  • Dual-control cars: your instructor has their own brake, so they can stop the car at any moment.
  • 90 minutes, not 60: enough time for the checks, the controls and a real first drive.
  • Manual or automatic: learn in either, and get honest advice on which suits you.
  • Local roads: we plan lessons from quiet streets near you up to the Mitcham, Morden and Tolworth test centres.
  • Proven results: BNM learners have a 98% pass rate, and more than 2,000 have passed with us.

Meet Your First-Lesson Instructor in South London

Syed Nauman Ali is a DVSA approved driving instructor (ADI) and instructor trainer with 15 years of experience across South and South West London. Nauman plans each first lesson around the learner: what they want from driving, what worries them and whether a manual or an automatic suits them best.

Where Will You Drive on Your First Lessons in South London?

BNM first lessons start on quiet streets near your home, work or college, then build up in 3 stages to the main roads around the test centres.

Lesson 1

Quiet Residential Streets

Your first lesson starts on a quiet road near your pick-up point. Many South London residential streets have a 20 mph limit, which gives you time to move off, steer and stop without pressure. Parked cars on both sides teach you to wait for oncoming traffic early on.

The next few lessons

Junctions, Cyclists and Buses

Once moving off and stopping feel steady, you add turns, crossroads and mini roundabouts. You learn to check for cyclists before you move off and to give buses room, both everyday parts of driving in South London.

Later lessons

Main Roads and Test Areas

Busy main roads like the A23 and A24, with bus lanes and red routes, come weeks later. Closer to your test, lessons cover the roads around the Mitcham, Morden and Tolworth test centres.

5 Ways to Get More From Your First Lesson

  1. Sleep and eat first. A good night's sleep and a light meal help you concentrate for the full 90 minutes.
  2. Wear thin, flat shoes. Trainers work well. Heels, flip-flops and heavy boots make it hard to feel the pedals.
  3. Bring your glasses. If you need glasses or contact lenses to read a number plate from 20 metres, wear them.
  4. Tell us what worries you. Nerves, past experience, ADHD, dyslexia or anything else: your instructor sets the pace around it.
  5. Bring one question. Manual or automatic, how many hours, when to book the theory test: lesson one is the time to ask.

Never driven before? Your first 90 minutes cost £55.

How Do You Get From Your First Lesson to Your Driving Test?

Learning to drive in South London follows 7 steps, from your provisional licence to your practical test at Mitcham, Morden or Tolworth.

  1. Get Your Provisional Licence

Apply on GOV.UK from 15 years and 9 months. It costs £34 online and should arrive within a week.

  2. Book Your £55 First Lesson

90 minutes from age 17, in a manual or an automatic. You don't need to pass your theory test first.

  3. Get Your Honest Plan

Your instructor estimates your hours and suggests a weekly lesson slot that fits your week.

  4. Take Weekly Lessons

Weekly lessons, often 2 hours, help skills stick. Gaps of 2–3 weeks early on mean relearning the basics.

  5. Pass Your Theory Test

The car theory test costs £23 and your pass lasts 2 years. You need it before you can book your practical test.

  6. Book Your Practical Test

In September 2026 the median wait was 16.1 weeks at Mitcham, 19.1 at Morden and 23.1 at Tolworth (DVSA), so plan ahead with your instructor.

  7. Take a Mock Test, Then Pass

A mock test under test conditions shows what to polish. 98% of BNM learners pass.

Nervous About Your First Lesson?

Feeling nervous before your first driving lesson is normal. Your instructor expects beginners to stall, steer wide and brake hard, and none of it counts against you. You start on quiet roads, the car has dual controls, and you can take a few minutes with the engine off first. Our guide to driving lessons for nervous learners has more tips.

Frequently Asked Questions

A first driving lesson with BNM Driving School costs £55 for 90 minutes. It is our introductory lesson for new learners, with no obligation to book more and no admin fees.

BNM’s first lesson lasts 90 minutes. That gives time for the licence and eyesight check, the cockpit drill and the controls, and still leaves time to drive.

Yes, almost certainly. Most learners move off and stop several times, and many finish with a short drive on quiet roads. You won’t drive on a main road until you’re ready.

No. You only need a provisional licence. You must pass your theory test before you book your practical test, and starting lessons early can help you pass it.

Bring your provisional driving licence, glasses or contact lenses if you need them, and wear thin, flat shoes such as trainers. The dual-control car and L plates are provided.

No. A first lesson isn’t a test. Stalling, kangaroo starts and wide turns are normal on lesson one, and your instructor uses them to plan your next lesson.

Learn manual if you want a licence for both types of car. Learn automatic if you want fewer controls to master. An automatic pass only lets you drive automatics.

It depends on you. Driving Standards Agency research found the average learner takes about 45 hours of lessons plus 22 hours of private practice. Your instructor estimates your hours after lesson one.
