Nauman is an exceptional instructor! He is very patient and knows exactly what to focus on you as an individual to prepare you for the test. I went to him after a couple of failed driving tests on the recommendation of a friend. My confidence was very low when I came to him and not only did he boost my confidence but also guided me based on my strengths and weaknesses. Finally passed the test all because of him!

What Is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a practical training course for new drivers, developed by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). It takes at least 6 hours and covers 6 modules: driving in town, in all weathers, on rural roads, at night, on dual carriageways and on motorways. You can take it at any time, but GOV.UK says it is most useful in the year after you pass your test.

BNM Driving School’s Pass Plus course is 6 hours of one-to-one training for £270, in a dual-control car with a DVSA approved instructor. There is no test at the end. Once you reach the required standard in all 6 modules, you can apply to the DVSA for your Pass Plus certificate, which some insurers accept for a discount.

What Are the Benefits of Pass Plus?

Pass Plus gives new drivers 5 benefits: motorway experience with an instructor, confident night driving, practice on fast and rural roads, a DVSA certificate and a possible car insurance discount.

Motorway Experience With an Instructor

The practical driving test doesn't include motorways. Pass Plus takes you onto the M25 in a dual-control car, with an instructor beside you the first time.

Confidence Driving at Night

The night module covers headlights, dazzle, judging speed and distance in the dark, and spotting cyclists and pedestrians. If you learned in summer, you may never have driven after dark.

Practice on Rural and Fast Roads

Country lanes, dual carriageways and national speed limits are hard to practise in South London alone. Pass Plus plans lessons on all of them.

A DVSA Pass Plus Certificate

Reach the required standard in all 6 modules and you can apply to the DVSA for a Pass Plus certificate. It usually arrives by post within 2 weeks.

A Possible Insurance Discount

Some insurers give new drivers a discount with a Pass Plus certificate. Not all do, and the amount varies, so check with your insurer before you book.

Pass Plus, a Motorway Lesson or a Refresher: Which Do You Need?

Choose Pass Plus if you want training across every road type and a DVSA certificate for your insurer. Choose a motorway lesson if motorways are your only worry, and a refresher lesson if you need confidence on the roads you already drive. The table compares the three on 6 points.

Who Is Pass Plus For?

Pass Plus suits 5 types of new driver. BNM Driving School teaches all five across South and South West London, from Battersea and Wimbledon to Croydon and Sutton.

  • Drivers in their first year: you have just passed and want to drive alone on every type of road, not just the test routes.
  • Drivers who passed in summer: your lessons were all in daylight, and the dark evenings are coming.
  • Drivers heading out of London: university, a new job or family visits mean motorways and country roads.
  • Drivers buying their first insurance: your insurer gives a Pass Plus discount, and you want the certificate.
  • Parents of new drivers: you want your son or daughter to have more training before they drive alone.

Passed with BNM? Your instructor already knows your driving, so your Pass Plus lessons go straight to the areas you need most.

When Is Pass Plus Not Worth It?

New driver phoning their insurer about a Pass Plus discount before booking with BNM

Pass Plus is not the best choice in 4 situations. A single lesson, or no extra training yet, may suit these drivers better:

  • Your insurer gives no discount: the training still helps, but check first if the discount is your main reason.
  • One area is the problem: if only motorways worry you, a 3-hour motorway lesson for £125 covers it.
  • You have years of experience: Pass Plus is built for new drivers, so a refresher lesson suits returning drivers better.
  • You haven’t passed yet: Pass Plus is for full licence holders, so it starts after your practical test.

Still learning? Start with a 90-minute intro lesson for £55, then come back for Pass Plus once you pass.

What Does Pass Plus Cover? The 6 Modules

Pass Plus covers 6 modules set by the DVSA: town driving, all weathers, rural roads, night driving, dual carriageways and motorways. Each module is practical, although local conditions can mean part of a module is taught as theory.

1. Driving in Town

Busy junctions, bus lanes, trams, cyclists and pedestrians. You practise planning ahead, lane choice and keeping calm in heavy traffic.

2. Driving in All Weathers

Rain, low sun and fog change your stopping distances and what you can see. You learn how to adjust your speed, gaps and lights.

3. Driving on Rural Roads

Narrow lanes, blind bends, hills and national speed limits. You practise reading the road ahead and passing horse riders and cyclists safely.

4. Driving at Night

Dipped and full beam, dazzle from oncoming lights, and judging speed and distance in the dark, on lit town roads and unlit roads.

5. Driving on Dual Carriageways

Joining and leaving at speed, lane discipline, overtaking and keeping a safe gap on roads like the A3 Kingston Bypass.

6. Driving on Motorways

Joining from a slip road, changing lanes, smart motorway signs and leaving at the right junction, on the M25 with an instructor beside you.

Why Choose BNM for Pass Plus?

New drivers choose BNM Driving School for Pass Plus across South and South West London for 6 reasons:

  • DVSA approved instructors: our instructors have 5–15 years of teaching experience, and every lesson follows the DVSA National Standard.
  • Dual-control cars: your instructor can step in at any moment, so your first motorway drive feels safe.
  • Every module on real roads: lessons cover Croydon’s trams, the lanes near Banstead, the A3 Kingston Bypass and the M25.
  • Night module at the right time: we plan your night driving for when it is actually dark, not as a classroom talk.
  • Honest advice: if a single motorway or refresher lesson suits you better, your instructor will say so.
  • Proven results: BNM learners have a 98% pass rate, and more than 2,000 have passed with us.

Meet Your Pass Plus Instructor in South London

Syed Nauman Ali is a DVSA approved driving instructor (ADI) and instructor trainer with 15 years of experience across South and South West London. Nauman plans each Pass Plus course around the driver: where they will drive after it, and which roads they have not met yet.

Where Do BNM Pass Plus Lessons Take You?

BNM Pass Plus lessons start from your home, work or college and use real South and South West London roads for each module, from Croydon's trams to the M25.

Modules 1 and 4

Town and Night Driving

Town lessons run through centres like Croydon, where trams share the road, and Sutton and Wimbledon, with bus lanes, busy junctions and pedestrian crossings. The night module returns to roads like these after dark, plus unlit roads where you judge dipped and full beam.

Modules 2 and 3

Rural Roads and All Weathers

Rural lessons use the lanes around Banstead, Chipstead and Epsom Downs: bends, hills, narrow roads and horse riders. The all-weather module covers whatever the day brings, from rain and low sun to fog, with theory on ice and snow when conditions don't allow.

Modules 5 and 6

Dual Carriageways and Motorways

Faster roads include the A3 Kingston Bypass, the Purley Way (A23) and the A217. The motorway module builds up to the M25 and the M23 at Hooley: joining, keeping a safe gap, changing lanes and leaving at the right junction.

4 Checks Before You Book Pass Plus

  1. Ask your insurer first. Not all insurers offer a Pass Plus discount, and the amount depends on the insurer. Ask before you book.
  2. Book in your first year. GOV.UK says Pass Plus is most useful in the year after your test. If you passed more than a year ago, check your insurer still gives a discount.
  3. Pick your season. From late October to March it is dark before 8pm, so the night module fits into an evening lesson. In June and July it stays light until after 9pm.
  4. Know there's no test. Your instructor assesses you through each module. You need to reach the required standard in all 6 to get the certificate.

  5. Reach the Standard in Each

There's no test at the end. Your instructor assesses you through every module.

  6. Send Your Training Report

You and your instructor sign the training report form, then you send it to the DVSA.

  7. Get Your Certificate

The DVSA posts your certificate, usually within 2 weeks. Show it to your insurer to claim any discount.

What Happens on Your First Pass Plus Lesson?

Your first BNM Pass Plus lesson follows 5 steps: a licence check, a short chat about your driving, an assessment drive, a plan for your 6 modules and your first module on the road. Your instructor picks you up from home, work or college.

  1. Show your licence. Bring your full driving licence so your instructor can check it.
  2. Talk about your driving. Where you drive now, where you will drive next and what worries you.
  3. Take an assessment drive. Your instructor sees how you drive on your own since passing.
  4. Agree your plan. Your instructor orders the 6 modules around your week, the season and the weather.
  5. Start your first module. Most drivers begin in town, then build up to faster roads.

Dual controls let your instructor step in at any moment, so you can take on dual carriageways and motorways with confidence.
